Dreams and vivid nightmares
Why hormones and lighter sleep make dreams vivid — and how journaling defuses them.
Vivid dreams and nightmares are extremely common in pregnancy. Fluctuating hormones lighten your overall sleep, which means you wake up in the middle of REM (dream) sleep more often — and remember more of what you were dreaming.
Stress and anxiety about the pregnancy amplify emotional dream content, so vaguely unsettling to genuinely nightmarish dreams often show up. This is normal, not a warning about anything specific.
Journaling before bed helps defuse recurring themes. Keeping the phone out of the bedroom, ending the day with a calm activity (reading, breathing exercises), and cutting news or true-crime content in the evenings all help shorten the anxiety loop.
