Handling insomnia trimester by trimester
The specific disruptors of each trimester — and small fixes that work at 3am.
First trimester insomnia is usually driven by rising progesterone (which paradoxically both sedates and disrupts sleep), plus frequent bathroom trips. Front-load fluids earlier in the day and empty your bladder right before bed.
Second trimester is often the most restful — the queasiness eases and the belly isn't yet unwieldy. Use this window to build a solid wind-down routine you can lean on later.
Third trimester brings heartburn, restless legs, hip pain, and the baby's active schedule. Elevate the head of the bed on blocks, avoid eating within 2 hours of bed, and pack the bedside table with pillows, water, and a snack for middle-of-the-night hunger.
