Baby DevelopmentDeveloping Ears: Sounds are Now Clearer
At 18 weeks, your baby is about 14-15 cm long and weighs 190-200 grams. The most fascinating development this week is happening in their sense of hearing. Your baby's ears have now moved to their final position, and the hearing center in the brain has become active. They can now hear not only your heartbeat or the rumbling of your stomach but also sounds from the outside world. A slamming door, loud music, or your voice... Your baby may jump or move in response to these sounds. It is not just hearing; the nervous system is also developing rapidly. The myelin sheath, which surrounds the nerves and ensures messages are transmitted quickly, has started to form this week. This means your baby's movements will become much more controlled and intentional. Your baby can now clasp their hands, grab their toes, and sleep and wake at regular intervals. If you are expecting a girl, the uterus and fallopian tubes have even moved into place this week. In boys, the prostate gland is taking shape. That little person inside is now a listener ready to connect with the outside world.
Your BodyTansiyon Dalgalanmaları ve Baş Dönmesi
During this stage of your second trimester, your circulatory system is adapting to support your growing baby. As your blood volume increases, your blood vessels expand, which may cause your blood pressure to drop slightly. This often leads to dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when standing up quickly, a condition known as orthostatic hypotension. When you lie on your back, the weight of your uterus can compress the main vein (vena cava), potentially reducing blood flow to your heart and causing shortness of breath. For this reason, sleeping on your left side is highly recommended. You may also experience round ligament pains in your lower abdomen as your uterus grows heavier. While these sharp sensations can be uncomfortable, they demonstrate your body's incredible strength and flexibility. To manage these changes, move slowly and take time to rest with your feet elevated.
Nutrition & HealthHeart Health & Omega-3: Fuel for Your Baby's Brain
At week 18, as your baby's brain development and nervous system structure gain momentum, you should prioritize Omega-3 fatty acids (especially DHA) in your diet. Omega-3 is vital for the healthy formation of your baby's brain structure, vision, and the connections between nerve cells. Research shows that babies of mothers who consume enough Omega-3 tend to have stronger cognitive abilities later in life. Try to eat at least two servings of low-mercury fish (such as salmon, sardines, or mackerel) per week. If you cannot eat fish, walnuts, flaxseeds, chia seeds, and purslane are great plant-based sources of Omega-3. However, since the conversion rate of plant-based sources into DHA is low, you may want to consider using a high-quality fish oil supplement after consulting your doctor. Additionally, your heart is working harder due to increased blood volume; therefore, keep swelling and blood pressure imbalances under control by limiting your sodium (salt) intake. Support your heart rhythm and muscle health by including magnesium (bananas, avocados, dark chocolate) and potassium in your diet. The path to your baby's intelligence starts with the healthy fats on your plate.
Mental HealthBonding Through Movement
Week 18 is the week when the bond many expectant parents share with their baby becomes physical. Your baby is now about the size of a bell pepper (14 cm). If you have started to feel your baby's movements (like the flutter of butterfly wings or a tiny "tap"), it makes pregnancy shift from an abstract idea into a concrete reality. However, don't feel inadequate or anxious if you haven't felt them yet. The position of the placenta or the baby can delay this sensation until the 20th or even 22nd week. Psychologically, the excitement and a bit of anxiety surrounding the Anatomy Scan appointment might dominate this week. Knowing that each of your baby's organs will be examined one by one might make you feel a little tense. This is a normal process. To cope with this anxiety, talk to your baby or play some music for them. Since they can hear you now, everything you tell them will strengthen the bond between you. If you have been feeling a bit "absent-minded" lately or finding it hard to focus on your tasks (pregnancy brain), remember that this is just your hormones at play and be kind to yourself. You are currently doing the most complex job in the world; everything else can wait for a while.
Weekly Tip
As your baby grows, your body’s reaction to lying on your back may become more intense. When you lie on your back, your uterus puts pressure on the main vein called the vena cava, making it harder for blood to return to your heart. This can reduce the blood flow to your baby. Weekly Tip: Create your perfect left-side sleeping position. Simply lying on your left side can sometimes cause hip and knee pain. To prevent this, place a long pillow between your legs; this keeps your hips aligned and helps prevent back pain. Place a small support pillow under your belly to reduce the pull of gravity. If you wake up on your back during the night, do not panic; your body is designed to alert you, so just roll back onto your left side. Sleeping on your left side not only improves blood flow to the baby but also helps your kidneys clear out waste and swelling more easily. Quality sleep is your best fuel for maintaining your energy.
