Managing gestational diabetes

The diet-and-walk playbook — and why 90% of cases resolve right after birth.

A gestational diabetes diagnosis feels heavy, but most cases are managed with diet and movement alone. The core habits: pair every carb with protein and fat, walk 10–15 minutes after meals, and log blood sugar as directed by your provider. Spread carbs across the day instead of concentrating them at one meal. Skip juice and sugary drinks entirely. Whole grains, beans, and vegetables release glucose more slowly than white bread, pasta, or rice — the same total carb amount, better blood-sugar curve. Around 90% of gestational diabetes resolves right after birth, but it does raise your long-term risk of type 2 diabetes. A postpartum glucose test at 6–12 weeks and then annually is the standard follow-up.
