First steps and walking

The wide 9-to-17 month range, what helps at home, and why walkers usually don't.

First independent steps typically arrive between 9 and 17 months. Early walkers aren't smarter, and late walkers usually catch up quickly once they start. Trust your baby's timeline; the range for typical is huge. What helps: unrestricted floor time, cruising practice along furniture, and lots of pull-up-to-stand opportunities. Push-toys (a stable weighted walker they push while walking behind) offer balance help without the safety issues of ride-in walkers. Bare feet on non-slippery floors give the best sensory feedback for balance. Shoes are for outside walking on rough surfaces. If your pediatrician has flagged specific gait or tone concerns, follow specialist referrals — otherwise, don't worry if your baby is walking on the later side.
