Head control and rolling
The first big motor wins from birth through 4 months, and what to expect when.
Head control develops between birth and 4 months. By 3 months, most babies hold their head steady when upright and can push up to a 45-degree angle on their forearms during tummy time. Wobble is normal; consistent stiffness or floppiness is worth mentioning.
Rolling usually starts tummy-to-back around 4 months, with back-to-tummy following a month or two later. Some babies skip rolling entirely and go straight to scooting or sitting — that's typical, not a red flag.
Once rolling begins, elevated surfaces are no longer safe for even a moment. Always place baby down on their back for sleep, and remove any swaddle that pins the arms. Every diaper change becomes a two-handed job.
