Diaper rash and skin issues

Simple prevention, zinc-oxide barriers, and when a rash needs a doctor's eye.

Diaper rash usually stems from prolonged moisture, friction, or irritation from stool. Change diapers frequently, air out the bottom for a few minutes at each change, and apply a thick zinc-oxide barrier cream at the first sign of redness. Baby powder and cornstarch are not recommended. Most rashes clear within 2–3 days with these basics. If the rash is bright red with satellite spots, doesn't respond to barrier cream in a week, or involves broken skin, it may be a yeast infection — mention it at your next visit. Eczema (dry, itchy patches on cheeks, elbows, or behind knees) is very common in the first year. Fragrance-free thick moisturizer twice daily is the first-line treatment. Persistent or severe eczema warrants a pediatrician conversation about hydrocortisone or referral.
