Storing breast milk and formula prep
Fridge, freezer, warming — and why microwaves never touch your baby's bottle.
Fresh breast milk keeps 4 hours at room temperature, 4 days in the fridge (back shelf, not the door), and 6 months in the freezer. Thawed milk should be used within 24 hours and never refrozen. Label every container with the date pumped.
For formula, use fresh water boiled and cooled to about 70°C to kill bacteria that can live in powder. Measure water into the bottle first, then add the correct scoops. Mix by rolling — not shaking, which creates bubbles and foam. Prepared bottles keep 2 hours at room temperature or 24 hours in the fridge.
Never microwave breast milk or formula. It destroys immune components, creates dangerous hot spots, and can burn baby's mouth. Warm the bottle by placing it in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes, then swirl and test on your inner wrist.
