Choosing bottles and nipples

Start with a slow-flow (level 1) nipple regardless of brand. Most newborns do best with the slowest possible flow because it mimics the pace of breastfeeding and gives their swallow reflex time to keep up. Flow rates aren't standardized, so "level 1" from one brand may pour faster than another. Bottle shape and nipple base matter too. Wider bases encourage a deeper latch, similar to the breast, and reduce nipple confusion for combination-fed babies. Anti-colic vent systems help some babies and do nothing for others — expect trial and error. Keep two or three brands on rotation before committing. Babies develop strong preferences by 4–6 weeks, so a full set of one type bought too early risks a drawer of rejected bottles. Signs the flow is wrong: milk dripping from mouth corners, gulping, or heavy fussing.
