PURPLE crying explained

PURPLE crying is a term coined by Dr. Ronald Barr to describe the normal fussy phase most newborns go through. It stands for: Peak of crying (around 2 months), Unexpected timing, Resists soothing, Pain-like face, Long-lasting bouts, and Evening timing. Most babies cry the most between 2 and 8 weeks, then it tapers off gradually. During peak weeks, some babies cry 3–5 hours per day even with excellent care — this is developmental, not a sign you're doing something wrong. Knowing the phase is normal helps parents ride it out without spiraling into guilt or panic. If the crying feels wildly outside the pattern — sudden onset, high pitch, weakness, or paired with fever — those are separate red flags that warrant a doctor visit.
