Crying

Decoding your baby's cry

The five common reasons and the mental short-list that usually solves it fast.

Newborns cry for a small handful of reasons: hunger, physical discomfort (wet diaper, cold, hot, scratchy tag), tiredness, gas or reflux, and overstimulation. Over the first weeks you'll start to notice that each has a slightly different pitch, tempo, and pause pattern. Keep a mental short-list rather than a printed checklist. Cycling through hunger → diaper → temperature → gas → overstim → sleep usually surfaces the cause within a minute or two. If baby settles the moment you fix one thing, that was it. Some crying has no findable cause — it's just how a still-developing nervous system releases tension. Holding baby close, dimming lights, and stepping into a quieter room often works when nothing on the checklist applies. Don't feel obligated to fix every cry.
