Screen time limits

The AAP guardrails without the guilt — and why the bedroom stays screen-free.

The AAP recommends no screen time under 18 months, except for video chat with family. Between 18 months and 2 years, small amounts of high-quality co-viewed content are okay. Between 2 and 5, cap at 1 hour a day of quality content, and watch together whenever possible. Why the limits: screens crowd out the two things babies and toddlers need most — face-to-face interaction and hands-on exploration. Both are how they learn language, motor skills, and emotional regulation. Avoid screens within an hour of bed — they suppress melatonin and delay sleep. Don't stress a rare exception (a flight, a sick day, a dinner out). It's the daily pattern that matters. Aim for a screen-free family meal and a screen-free bedroom for the strongest habits.
