Play ideas for 0–3 month olds

Newborn vision is deliberately blurry beyond 20–30cm and best focuses on high-contrast black-and-white patterns. Simple flip-cards, contrast books, and mirrors positioned on a play mat are far more engaging than colorful toys at this age. Mirrors deserve special mention — babies can't recognize themselves yet, but the responsive "face" that reacts to their every move is endlessly interesting. Prop a floor-safe baby mirror during tummy time and watch the extended focus it produces. Talk and sing constantly. Your voice is the most engaging toy in the room, and repetitive rhythmic exposure to language in the first year predicts vocabulary later. Rhymes, made-up songs, running commentary on what you're doing — all of it counts.
