Mental HealthThe Waiting Game: Mental Preparation+
It is natural to feel some pressure when your baby has not arrived by the expected date. However, week 40 is simply an estimate, and many first-time parents find that labor does not begin until week 41. To support the onset of labor, your body needs to produce oxytocin, which requires a state of relaxation. Use this time to rest and protect your peace from external questions. Stay focused on your birth plan while remaining adaptable, practice deep breathing, and trust in your body's natural timing. Visualizing the moment you meet your baby will help ease anxiety and prepare you emotionally for the delivery.
Preparation & ShoppingFinal Checks: Going Home and Car Seat+
Week 40 is the time when all your shopping should be finished and every preparation should be set to ready mode. Your hospital bag should be right by the door, your car’s gas tank full, and all safety measures for the journey home after birth in place. The most important technical preparation this week is ensuring the infant car seat is correctly installed in your vehicle. Many hospitals will not discharge your baby without a car seat that meets safety standards; therefore, do not leave the installation to the last minute and practice checking it a few times. Setting up a support system at home for the first few weeks after birth is the most sensible preparation for this week. Ready-made meals in the freezer, stocked basic cleaning supplies, and diapers will make your life incredibly easy. Also, get your nursing corner ready with a comfortable chair, a side table for water, and a nursing pillow. Prepare your baby’s sleeping area with clean sheets washed in fragrance-free detergent. If you have another child or a pet at home, finalize who will look after them while you are at the hospital and plan for their first meeting when you arrive home with the baby. An organized home is the first step toward a peaceful postpartum period.
