Gravid uke 34

Baby DevelopmentImmunity and Fat: Preparing for the World
At week 34, your baby's immune system is developing rapidly as antibodies pass through the placenta to provide natural protection against germs after birth. The vernix layer is thickening, and fat stores are filling up to help your baby regulate their body temperature. As the womb becomes more crowded, you will feel more distinct nudges from elbows and knees rather than large movements. Your baby's lungs are now nearly mature, and they are practicing breathing more frequently. The central nervous system is also maturing, with established sleep-wake cycles and eyes that can now constrict or dilate in response to light, showing that the visual cortex is active.
Your BodyPelvic Pressure Changes
Your uterus is now positioned just below your ribs and may have expanded to 1000 times its normal size. This massive growth puts pressure on your diaphragm and lungs, causing you to feel short of breath even with the slightest physical activity. This week, many expectant parents may experience lightening, which means the baby is gradually moving down into the pelvic area toward the birth canal. While this makes breathing easier in the upper abdomen, it increases pressure on your bladder, making bathroom trips even more frequent. Additionally, your body increases the amount of the hormone relaxin to prepare for birth. This hormone loosens your joints and the ligaments in your pelvic area, stretching the space for the baby to pass through. However, this loosening can lead to an unsteady gait, often called a waddle, and intense lower back or groin pain. Feeling sharp pressure in your lower abdomen and between your legs is caused by your baby's head trying to settle into the pelvis. Your blood volume is at its peak, which can cause more swelling in your hands and feet, and sometimes even numbness in your hands (carpal tunnel).
Nutrition & HealthEnergy and Calcium Needs
By week 34, even though your baby's skeletal system is fully formed, they are still drawing heavily on your calcium stores to strengthen their bones. If you do not get enough calcium, your baby will pull this mineral directly from your own bones and teeth. This is why you should focus on yogurt, kefir, almonds, dark leafy greens, and calcium-fortified foods in your diet. Additionally, as your baby's brain development continues at full speed, make sure to consume Omega-3 fatty acids and include walnuts and fatty fish in your meals. Heartburn and reflux may peak this week because the stomach is pushed high up, making it easy for acid to move into the esophagus. To manage this, eating six small, light meals instead of three large ones will help ease your digestion. To prevent constipation, increase your fiber intake and drink at least 3 liters of water daily to reduce swelling and refresh the amniotic fluid. Avoiding sugary and heavy pastries will prevent unnecessary weight gain and help you avoid the fatigue caused by blood sugar imbalances. Think of your nutrition as a form of care; every healthy food you eat is building your baby's cells.
Mental HealthBirth and Anxiety
As the end of the journey comes into view, week 34 can trigger fears about childbirth or parenting anxiety in expectant parents. Thoughts about when the baby will arrive, how labor will start, and how life will change afterward can sometimes lead to sleepless nights. The anxiety felt during this period is completely natural and is part of your body's instinct to protect and prepare you. To protect your mental health, focusing on details you can control and staying informed will be your greatest strength. Sharing your feelings with your partner, attending birth preparation classes, or simply reading accurate information from reliable sources helps calm the scenarios in your mind. Be kinder to yourself than ever and let go of the pressure to be a perfect parent. Instead of focusing on what's missing in the nursery or small details in your hospital bag, try to imagine the first bond you will form with your baby. Deep breathing exercises and meditation are very effective in balancing the emotional fluctuations caused by hormones. Remember, your body is designed to manage this process, and everything will happen in its own natural rhythm, step by step.
Preparation & ShoppingHospital Bag Safety
You are now at a stage where you need to be ready at any moment; therefore, week 34 is the ideal time to place your hospital bag by the door. Your bag should contain not only baby clothes but also personal care items for your comfort, such as postpartum pads, nursing bras, front-opening nightgowns, and lip balm. Additionally, you should install the car seat in your vehicle and practice how to use it, as carrying your baby without this safety equipment upon discharge is not legally or medically recommended. Home preparations should also pick up speed this week. While doing final checks of the nursery, check the batteries and functionality of medical devices like baby monitors, thermometers, and nasal aspirators. Wash baby clothes and linens with fragrance-free, hypoallergenic detergents, then iron and store them in a way that keeps them dust-free. In the kitchen, preparing practical frozen meals for the first days after birth or stocking up on groceries will minimize the chaos when you return home. Being prepared provides not only physical readiness but also great mental peace of mind and motivation for the birth process.
