Beating first-trimester nausea

Bland snacks before bed, ginger tea, and B6 — the evidence-backed nausea toolkit.

Nausea is worst on an empty stomach. Keep crackers, toast, or a plain banana on the nightstand and eat something bland before getting out of bed. Small, frequent snacks throughout the day work better than three big meals. Sip ginger tea, chew crystallized ginger, or try ginger candies — ginger is one of the few evidence-backed remedies for pregnancy nausea. Peppermint tea works for some. Keep smells mild by having someone else cook if food odors trigger you. Avoid spicy, greasy, and highly-acidic foods. If nausea prevents eating or drinking for 24 hours or you can't keep water down, call your provider — that's hyperemesis, not typical morning sickness, and there are safe medications that help.
