Family meals with a toddler
Same food, small portions, no short-order kitchen — and why the mess is the point.
By 12–18 months, your toddler can eat versions of the family meal with light adaptations — smaller pieces, softer textures, less spice, and a family-size portion cooked without salt before you season yours. Serving the same food builds acceptance and simplifies cooking.
Sit down together for at least one meal a day when possible. Family meals are consistently linked to better nutrition, less picky eating, and stronger emotional development. Keep them screen-free and conversational.
Involve toddlers in prep — rinsing veggies, stirring, tearing lettuce. Kids who help cook eat a noticeably wider variety of foods and develop food confidence that lasts into adulthood. Mess is part of the deal.
