Pretend play, from 12 months on

Watch for the first pretend-play moments around 12 months. Baby holds a phone-shaped block to their ear, feeds a doll a spoonful of imaginary food, or pretends to sip from an empty cup. These small acts represent a huge cognitive leap — the understanding that one thing can stand for another. Encourage it by modeling. "Let's give teddy a drink." Hand baby a cup and point at the teddy bear. They'll often imitate. This early symbolic thinking is the foundation of language, math, and imagination. Simple, open-ended objects inspire more pretend play than battery-powered toys. A wooden spoon and a plate become a whole restaurant. A cardboard box becomes a house, a car, and a boat in one afternoon. Less-structured toys → more imagination.
