Switching from breast to bottle

A gentle transition timeline that works…

A gradual transition works better than a hard cutover. Introduce one bottle a day for a week, then two, and so on over several weeks. Sudden switches can cause engorgement for the breastfeeding parent and confusion or refusal for the baby. Have someone other than the birth parent offer the first bottles. Babies who smell breast milk on their nursing parent often refuse a bottle from them but accept one from another caregiver. Warm the nipple in your hand to make it feel more inviting. Start introducing bottles around 3–6 weeks if you plan to combination-feed. Earlier can undermine breastfeeding; much later often triggers strong refusal. Once baby is used to bottles, drop or shift breast sessions gradually to give your supply time to adjust.
