Cradle cap: what actually helps

Oil, brush, wash, repeat — and why picking at the scales always makes it worse.

Cradle cap is a common, harmless build-up of skin cells on the scalp. It looks alarming — yellowish, greasy, sometimes flaky patches — but it doesn't hurt or itch, and it isn't caused by poor hygiene. Massage a small amount of coconut, mineral, or almond oil into the scalp and leave it for 15–30 minutes to soften the scales. Then gently loosen with a soft brush or fine-tooth comb, and follow with a mild baby shampoo. Repeat 2–3 times a week during a flare. Never pick at the scales with your fingernails — it can cause bleeding and infection. Most cases clear on their own by six months. If patches spread beyond the scalp, become inflamed, or develop crusting with fluid, see your pediatrician.
